A career as an Advocate offers the chance to combine intellectual challenge, interest and variety with the opportunity to work with and for people. A Manx Advocate's role is to give advice on all matters of law to members of the public, companies and institutions. It may involve representing a client in Court or advising a client on a host of matters such as matrimonial, criminal, personal injury, conveyancing or commercial/business.
An Advocate combines the functions performed in England and Wales by a Solicitor and Barrister in that he or she has the right of audience before all the courts on the Island. This allows the Advocate greater opportunities with respect to the services he or she can offer at the same time allowing the client to be represented right through from initial instructions through to final resolution in court.
As the Island has grown in complexity, particularly with respect to financial services, the need for Advocates with specialist skills has increased. The legal profession has met this need to offer specialist legal services. The ability to offer practical solutions to resolve the disputes which arise within the Island Community however remains central to the Advocates role.
Advocates firms on the Isle of Man range from sole practitioners to large practices with specialist departments providing advice and assistance in areas such as shipping, banking, insurance, trust, commercial, company, private client, property and litigation.
